Back to work…

Sorry, but have to sound off about something I heard today.

There is a very well-intentioned group of people who are trying to raise money for children orphaned by the 3.11 disaster in the Tohoku area to assist with their education until the age of 18. I do not know all the details, so I have to reserve complete judgement on their work. At face value, it appears to be a necessary and humanitarian effort which I would support. There may be one caveat. The children must stay in their local area to continue their education.

*IF* these children are outside of Fukushima, I would fully support this effort. However, if the children are required to stay in areas of high radiation, playing, eating, swimming, walking to and from school on streets with readings beyond those safe for a nuclear worker (as has been found since 3.11), another way must be found. THESE CHILDREN MUST BE EVACUATED FROM FUKUSHIMA and AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Saying “It’s okay for them to grow up in those areas” is tantamount to saying “it’s okay to drive down a highway at full ‘legal’ speed with the kids sitting on the hood of the car.” Ridiculous. Childrens’ bodies are growing. They cannot be exposed to these levels without some consequence to their health. Nurses with children are leaving the prefecture for fears of the effects of radiation. Abnormal growths have already been found in some children.

Leaving the children in these areas amounts to state-sanctioned child abuse.

Nine Mile Point (Unit 1), Indian Point (Unit 3) in the State of New York were automatic shutdowns because of electrical grid problems. Salem (Unit 1) in New Jersey was manually shut down because of high river water levels and debris in the water.
Oyster Creek (NJ)’s alert due to the high water levels at the water intake remains.

Nuclear plant shuts down unit as storm hits coast

JOSH LEDERMAN

Associated Press= WASHINGTON (AP) — Part of a nuclear power plant was shut down late Monday while another plant — the nation’s oldest — was put on alert after waters from superstorm Sandy rose 6 feet above sea level.

One of the units at Indian Point, a plant about 45 miles north of New York City, was shut down around 10:45 p.m. because of external electrical grid issues said Entergy Corp., which operates the plant. The company said there was no risk to employees or the public, and the plant was not at risk due to water levels from the Hudson River, which reached 9 feet 8 inches and was subsiding. Another unit at the plant was still operating at full power.

No, I haven’t left. Life has become a little too busy for comfort.

Went to the Nagoya demo on Friday. It’s obvious that there are fewer people, probably not from lack of interest, but because it’s getting chilly out there at night. More folks tend to show up from 7:00 pm, and Friday there were about 130 by the end at 8:00. They carry on.

Latest important quake news was today… 7.7 below the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, Canada. As I write, tsunami waves have reached Hawaii. Advisory canceled for British Columbia and Oregon. N.California remains under advisory (19:22).

Had a tiny tremor here in Aichi, if anyone besides me is interested:

Japan Nuke Plant Water Worries Rise

[…] leaks in reactor facilities are allowing ground water pour in [at Fukushima Daiichi]

[…]

Nuclear engineer and college lecturer Masashi Goto said the contaminated water buildup poses a long-term health and environmental threat. He worries that the radioactive water in the basements may already be getting into the underground water system, where it could reach far beyond the plant, possibly the ocean or public water supplies.

“You never know where it’s leaking out and once it’s out you can never put it back in place,” he said. “It’s just outrageous and shows how big a disaster the accident is.”

However, Tokyo is by no means only endangered from the south. Around 100 km north of the capital stands the Tokai Nuclear Power Plant in Tokai Village, Ibaraki Prefecture. It was months after the Fukushima disaster before events that occurred at the plant’s No. 2 reactor on March 11, 2011 — the day of the Great East Japan Earthquake — came to light.

In fact it turns out that one of three pumps installed for cooling the reactor was inundated by a tsunami that reached 5.4 meters. If it had risen another 70 cm, it would have knocked out the other two pumps as well. It was simply good luck that work to raise the height of the sea wall to 6.1 meters was completed on March 9.

If a similar accident to that at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant had struck the Tokai reactor, airborne plumes of radioactive substances may very well have shrouded Tokyo….

PACIFIC ALBACORE CARRY BARELY DETECTABLE FINGERPRINTS OF FUKUSHIMA DISASTER

10-24-12

Snip:

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Samples of albacore tuna caught off the West Coast of the United States show minute traces of radiation that can be traced to the Fukushima reactor disaster, according to an interdisciplinary team of scientists from Oregon State University and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The radiation levels in fish analyzed to date are far below anything that would pose a risk to humans who consume the fish, the research team emphasized. The findings are preliminary; additional fish remain to be tested.

But the findings could reveal new information about where Pacific albacore travel during their migratory lives – and how what happens in one part of the ocean can affect the food web thousands of miles away.

Iwata Wataru, Nadine Ribault and Thierry Ribault,Thyroid Cancer in Fukushima: Science Subverted in the Service of the State

http://japanfocus.org/-Iwata-Wataru/3841?utm_source=October+8%2C+2012&utm_campaign=China%27s+Connectivity+Revolution&utm_medium=archive

On 11 September 2012, in a conference room in a hotel in Fukushima city, Professor Yamashita Shunichi presented the latest results of the Fukushima Prefectural People’s Health Management Survey, launched in June 2011. Twenty-seven people were in the audience, mainly journalists. The CRMS (Citizen’s Radiation Measuring Station network) was one of two citizen groups present on that day.
Last year Yamashita had recommended that the people of Fukushima smile in order to better face radiation, and he stated that 100 mSv per year is an acceptable radiation exposure limit. Today he sits before the “exploratory committee” of the survey, which he presides over.
The final objectives of the Fukushima health survey were set by Yamashita and Prof. Suzuki Shinichi even before obtaining the first results. They were: “to calm the anxiety of the population” and to convince doubters that “the health impact of the nuclear accident of Fukushima can be assumed to be very minor.”
What is needed to determine the risk of radiation and to protect the children of Fukushima?

From EX-SKF:

The Economist: Japan’s nuclear disaster – Meet the Fukushima 50? No, you can’t

The Economist writer, writing from Iwaki City in southern Fukushima, sounds rather exasperated or sarcastic (or both) in the opening sentence of his article:

IT HAS taken the Japanese government more than 18 months to pay tribute to a group of brave men, once known as the “Fukushima 50”, who risked their lives to prevent meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant from spiralling out of control.

The article ends with:

The media attention is always focused on those in power, who typically do nothing to merit the recognition. The multitudes on the frontline, who put their heads down and do all the hard work are treated as faceless, nameless and ultimately forgotten.

with the writer calling it “one of the tragic flaws of modern Japan“.

I seem to be already hearing an “It is the same everywhere in the world, not just Japan” chorus, but as the writer points out in the article, it may be only in Japan where these workers themselves and their families are bullied by people around them for having tried their best to contain the nuclear disaster in Fukushima. For the case of TEPCO workers at the plant, see my post from February this year. The article in that post was written by a reporter from Germany’s Spiegel.

I think hardly anyone in Japan paid any attention to the Spiegel article. It will be the same with The Economist’s article. It doesn’t occur to many that the workers have been treated poorly, not only by TEPCO and by the government but also by ordinary people like them. See no evil, hear no evil.

Continues with article from The Economist at:

2,000 Protest in Nagoya Today

According to estimates given by the Independent Web Journal, the demonstration held in Nagoya today, “Gempatsu Iran Ga Ne” (We Don’t Want Nuclear Power – Nagoya dialect), 2,000 people marched and chanted through the streets of downtown Nagoya in  Aichi and the shopping area of Osu, an area attractive to teens and young adults. The trucks carrying loudspeakers played reggae beats and “DJs” chanted slogans protesting the restart of the Oi Nuclear Power Plant. Families with young children, some in strollers, walked the many kilometers showing their concern about the restarts the Japanese government has allowed and is planning for the near future.

Did you know that there is a law in Japan that the only entity that can legally use geiger counters to measure radiation is the government? According to this mother, in spite of the law, local governments bought the measuring devices and, consequently, found widespread contamination of the prefecture of Fukushima had been contaminated. And still, about 300,000 children under 15 years of age are allowed to walk around in the areas, go to school, go swimming in pools, play in parks (with trees with radioactive leaves), and be exposed on a daily basis.

This is criminal.
