Change.org petition (in Japanese) calling on the immediate closure of Sendai Nuclear Plant, following the Kyushu earthquakes. Sign and share!

「熊本地震」が「中部九州大震災」へと拡大し、さらに拡大する危険性さえ危惧される中で、川内原発の運転をやめないのは狂気の沙汰です。即刻、止めてください。

Rain is forecast for Kyushu. Risk of landslides. 973 households have to evacuate by 3:30 pm.

This, from a Facebook friend:

Listening now to NHK live web streaming (English: http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/live/ and Japanese: http://www3.nhk.or.jp). The earthquakes in Kyushu are both in Kumamoto and Oita Prefectures. Experts are worried about a chain of earthquakes, which has never happened in the world. Heavy rain expected to start tonight. Risk of continuing earthquakes. Risk of more landslides. Watching the images, the damage is much larger and wide-spread than I realized. I can see how scared and nervous people in the effected areas are. Why the government does not feel any need to suspend operations of the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant is a mystery to me. Sending love and light and millions of angels.

For friends and family around the world who have been following the earthquakes in Kyushu, just to let you know, we are fine here in Nagoya. I didn’t know about it until Friday morning.

We are about where the right-most “3” is on the map below (of this morning’s aftershock):

The rough part for those down in Kyushu is that the first quake destabilized buildings, and the aftershocks are collapsing them.

M saw a rather unusual news item earlier today, though:

「熊本地震は南海トラフ地震の前兆かもしれない」専門家が警告

http://zasshi.news.yahoo.co.jp/article?a=20160416-00048455-gendaibiz-soci

A quick, brief, translation goes something like this…

The earthquake that occurred is in very “bad position” because this was considered the epicenter in the prefecture (Kyushu). The Tagawa fault runs from the base of Mount Aso and the fault at Aso is related from Wakayama to Nagano, Shizuoka, Aichi, and Shikoku Prefectures, at the top of the concentration zone of the giant fault leading to Kyushu. If we take this into account, at the worst, Nagano and Shizuoka, Shikoku, Kyushu, may have a similar inland earthquakes, and this is likely to happen in quick succession.

For years they have been predicting a major quake along the Nankai and/or Tonankai trough, and this is exactly where this article is pointing to. (See my earlier discussion on the Nankai Quake at:

https://uhohjapan2.wordpress.com/2012/08/31/day-538-and-with-a-nankai/)

Here’s another jpg of the Nankai Tonankai trough:

Here in Aichi prefecture today, folks are going about their business as usual.

I got my bicycle fixed and bought more batteries and emergency food to take to work on Monday.

Just in case.

[*If* something really does happen here and I sill have electricity and Internet, I will write updates when I can. First, check Facebook ;-)]

Gundersen: Image shows radioactive “thermal flare” was coming from Fukushima Reactor 3 — “Exactly where the containment should be” (VIDEO)

Source: The Medical and Ecological Consequences of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident, Day 1
Author: The Helen Caldicott Foundation
Date Presented: March 11, 2013

Arnie Gundersen, Fairewinds Energy Education: Tepco’s known about this for 2 years, but has not talked about it.

That flare right here is exactly where the containment should be, and that flare is at 128°C which means it’s not steam. Steam can’t exist over 100°C. […] At atmospheric pressure when you boil steam you’re only going to get to 100°C. That flare is at 128°C which means that it’s not steam.

It means it’s hot radioactive gases being released directly from the containment. It also means that inside the containment, it was not below the boiling of water, it was above the boiling point of water. There was no liquid water inside that containment.

This is on March 20, nine days after the accident. The containment is venting hot radioactive gases directly to the environment.

This is proof positive […] they’ve known for a long time that huge amounts of cesium were being released directly to the air because they weren’t being trapped in the water in the suppression pool.

“So how far and how fast [is the cesium traveling]? If you take a broader look at the Pacific Ocean and you look for a front of where you see the edge of the cesium moving. This goes to March 2012, about 180 degrees. This is actually based on samples, not models.”

In fact, we all know how that turned out, and I think Fukushima is going down a very similar road. This is a long battle and it is far from being over.”  Two years later, it’s still far from over. “

Great. From Enformable:

Two years have passed since Japan nuked the rest of the world

To date, all attempts to model or accurately measure the core damage and radiation releases from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in the wake of the March 11th earthquake and tsunami have proved incomplete, unreliable, and admittedly unable to accurately replicate the sequence of events, largely due to the lack of information available.[1]  Two years after the onset of the nuclear disaster, all efforts put forward by the nuclear industry around the world have proved inadequate to stem the tide of public opinion and active opposition to nuclear power.

Fukushima Daiichi is still in the ‘Early Stages’ of the disaster

At Fukushima Daiichi, workers have been unable to locate any of the three melted cores, and as of March 2013, there are still over 10 million becquerels per hour[2], or 240 million becquerels per day, of radioactive cesium being released from the reactors.

The titles of the entries will have a new look from now on. Instead of Day 733, to make things a little shorter, it will be 2:1 (2 years and one day since 3.11).

Next item of business, I will now happily eat my words. A reader mentioned I was chomping at the bit, expecting MSM to cover the protests on the evening they occurred. Right. And there was no coverage. However, Monday and yesterday, in the Chunichi Shinbun, and other web outlets, there was *some* reporting of the protests, a sample for your reading pleasure, below.

First, though, if you are lucky enough to be able to catch this in time, have a look at this film before it access is denied, please do:

Truth to Power: Japanese Media, International Media and 3.11 Reportage

http://www.japanfocus.org/-David-McNeill/3912

…The electric utilities in Japan are major TV sponsors.  I found this out two years ago. They spent 70~88.8 billion yen on advertising that year, ahead of Panasonic with 70 billion yen and Toyota at 50 billion yen.  When I started claiming that this amounted to bribery of the media by TEPCO, I was no longer asked to appear on radio shows.

…That’s right.  Before the disaster, TBS had a history of inviting experts from the (anti-nuclear) citizens’ nuclear information center; the director of TBS had personal contact with them.  But they also always invited pro-nuclear people from the so-called nuclear village, as balance.  After the crisis, Fuji TV had a guy called Fujita Yuko, who has always been anti-nuclear, but only once. On the afternoon of March 11th he said there was the possibility of a meltdown.  He was never allowed back on screen.
